Idea | Memento Mori
“Memento Mori” is Latin for “Remember that you will die.” Now, before you abandon me because of this seemingly grim subject, hear me out.
Something strange happens when we realize our own mortality. It’s best exhibited in the song “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw. If for some reason, you’ve never heard it (or would like to listen again), here it is:
When we accept that our time is limited, we’re more apt to make better use of that precious time. In a Toastmasters meeting I attended years ago, a wise woman gave a speech in which she expressed her long-held desire to witness New England in the fall. She went on to say that, at her age, she had at most ten more Autumns in her life before old age would hinder travel. That’s it, only ten chances. Happily, her husband took her on the trip.
There are no guarantees. We may have decades or days. Instead of seeing this as a sad thing, see it as an opportunity. Live this day as though it counts… because it does!
Book | “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk”
Have you ever tried to talk with someone only to have them shut you down or get angry with you? Why? Most likely, it was your approach. “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk” by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish will reveal the reasons why our attempts at communication go off the rails, and, more importantly, how to get them back on the right track.
Even if you don’t have kids, this book is a marvel! You’ll learn about positive communication - how to show someone you care simply by talking in a different manner.
You’ll be inspired to try these methods with the people around you, even that prickly person in your life. Prepare to be amazed!
Video | The Ames Window
Can you really believe your eyes? Can your eyes lie to you, or, better yet, is it possible for you to see something and interpret it incorrectly?
The video above is challenging, not simply from an optical illusion standpoint, but from a philosophical one as well. The creator states this in the video but, if you’re anything like me, you may have thought the same thing during the viewing.
There’s more to our reality than meets the eye. Being open-minded is tough when faced with information that goes against what we know to be true. Yet, it’s these challenging encounters that expand our horizons… if we allow them to.
Self-Care | Send Birthday Cards
This may sound backward. How can sending a birthday card to someone else help you with self-care? Simple:
“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 ESV
When you give love, you feel the love and so does the recipient if they’re willing to accept; if not, you still get the feeling. Cool, eh?
A birthday card celebrates the beginning and continuation of someone’s life. In that way, self-care follows “I care.”
