Do you have a junk drawer? It’s not a bad concept, really - one drawer in your house that has misfit items. Problem is, the junk drawer could be a microcosm of our entire life. Is your house in order with the exception of that one drawer or does that drawer represent the state of your whole house?
Imagine a giant drawer filled with other drawers along with shelves and broad surfaces; everything is tidy and in order. Wouldn’t that be nice? There is a way for you to have it. Plus it’s free and easy. (And, no, this is not a paid advertisement.)
The madness of chaos
Chaos is the absence of order, much like darkness is the absence of light. Have you ever been walking in the dark and stubbed your toe? Chaos can do the same. Yet, in this case, your “toe” is your mind, behavior, and lifestyle.
At the same time, like darkness, chaos can be exciting and fun; filled with novelty, spontaneity, and surprise. Chaos can also give you the illusion of being busy with meaningful work. Yet, if you’re operating in a chaotic manner, you have no way of calculating how productive you could be if you were organized.
What a notion!
How do you get from chaos to order? As they say, the first step is to admit you have a problem, but what would be a good Step Two? Unfortunately, when it comes to getting organized, there are myriad disparate paths to embark upon. It can be confusing, overwhelming, and frustrating. More chaos, it seems.
Here’s what you do: get Notion. Get it on your phone. Get it on your computer. It’s free for personal use so you lose nothing. What is Notion? Simply put, it’s an app that expands as far as you desire. You can move things around, make pages, and store tons of info. It’s amazing!
How to use it
I get it. It’s tough enough to get organized, let alone figure out a new app. I encourage you to give it a try. Notion is like having a big, empty warehouse where you can build out the inside however you like. As you place things therein, you’ll find that you want to organize your stuff. It’s weird, but it’s true.
If you’re like me, you’ll eventually geek out to How-To videos. That said, for now, I recommend that you start small. Just do simple stuff. A fun place to start is to create a bucket list or a wish list for yourself. Then you can move to things like insurance information and employment history; mundane, but good to have as a reference in one easy-to-access place. Later, you can build your plans to conquer the world.
Conclusion
Gathering up your mess and organizing it can be overwhelming, but consider the alternative. You already know what chaos feels like. It sucks. Getting organized takes effort, but the payoff is incredible. Notion is a cheap and easy way to start to kick chaos to the curb.
Once you start placing your stuff in Notion, it’ll become inspiring. You’ll see that your life is complex, multi-faceted, and important. You deserve order. How’s that for a notion?
